Concrete, in construction, structural material consisting of a hard, chemically inert particulate substance, known as aggregate (usually sand and gravel), that is bonded together by cement and water.
2.00 Batching and Mixing
First step for mix is the batching. In the previous days we performed batching by volume for hand mixer but in the recent day Batching plants or small modern mixer or self loading mixer are going to be available which helps to perform batching 99% (approximate) correct by weigh.
For mixing, hand mixers is available but modern batching plants have strong mixers like PAN or TWIN SHAFT.

2.10 Concept of Ready Mix Concrete
Concrete is a product which was mostly produced at the site by hand mixer but users can get it by order like other products from RMC company in fully ready conditions. The manufacturer will produce concrete at factory by batching plant, transport by transit mixer and shall pump it to the customer’s desired position by the concrete pump.
2.20 Production process of Ready Mix Concrete
There is a short production flow in RMC plant. Mostly all organ of plant brings all raw materials to the mixer after Batching. Mixer does mixing and after a certain time it delivers mix to the Transit Mixer or pump or any kind of hopper. Transit mixer transport the mix to the site. For pumping, it discharges concrete to pump’s hopper.
2.30 Testing of Concrete
Field test for fresh concrete- Slump test and flow table tests are for workability checking. Temperature checking for acceptance of concrete. Washing of concrete for checking aggregate content. Core test and non-destructive test on hardened concrete to measure the strength of hardened concrete at the structure.
Laboratory test- Compressive strength test, Consistency test
2.40 Transporting of Concrete
Concrete can be transported by open dumper or Transit Mixer’s drum or wheelbarrow. For paving concrete, an open dumper or dump truck is used. Fresh workable concrete is transported by Transit Mixer drum.
2.50 Conveying, pumping and pouring
Concrete is conveyed by belt conveyor for short distance but for long distance, concrete can be conveyed by concrete pump. If single pump cannot convey ,number of pump can be used in relay even to convey more than a kilometer.
Pouring of concrete for an inaccessible( for vehicle) site can only be done by concrete pump. Site on hilltop , high rise building, site after crossing soft soil/hill can be poured
3.00 Durability
The structure is designed considering life more than 50 years. More durable concrete will give more life. Considering durability many caution or steps are executed during construction but it might be felt unnecessary. Senior Engineers are witness of such many construction mistakes. After 20 years when the structure is becoming abandoned that time experienced Engineer can comment on construction mistakes done.
4.00 Modern Concrete
SSC- Self compacting concrete
HPC - High performance Concrete, strength more than 40 Mpa
Semi dry concrete- For production of block, pavers, uni pavers, kerbs etc.
Light weight concrete - Foam concrete, Auto clave concrete etc.
Ferrocement - To produce concrete sheet for many other purposes, in Bangladesh roof top water tank but in freezing area it has versatile uses for insulating purposes.
5.00 Why Concrete Technology
To improvise the quality of concrete and for diversified use, technology is required. Now by the concrete, 40-50 storey building can be constructed as the concrete can achieve even 100Mpa compressive strength. Low strength concrete takes more space in the ground for column, even project cannot be planned due to ow strength concrete. Now the less sized pier and column helps to plan project in congested area also.
